Two SharePoint must haves announced on the SharePoint Team Blog
The first is a cross browser compatible replacement for the rich text editor in MOSS 2007 that was mentioned on the SharePoint Team blog about 6 weeks ago.
The second is an offline reader for WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 sites, which is highly recommend for staying up to date with frequently updated sites such as the SharePoint Community Portal.
They are both available for free!

32-bit Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2007 MP support for MOM 2007(Operations Manager 2007)
For your information, there is currently a MP for Exchange 2007 for MOM 2005 SP1. This can be converted to a OpsMgr 2007 with some tools from the MOM 2005 ResKit and from the OpsMgr 2007 RC2 installation media. Here are the steps:
Mgmt Pack Convert from 2005 to 20071) Export them from MOM2K5 with Administrator Console2) Use MP2XML from MOM2K5 resource kit to convert the AKM file into a XML file3) Use MPConvert from Ops Mgr installation media to convert the MOM2K5 XML file into a Ops Mgr XML file4) Use Ops Mgr Operator Console to import the XML file as a management pack
Next, i used a 32-bit version of Exchange 2007 Eval edition. All worked well, but then i saw no updates or any information on the Exchange 2007 show up on my OpsMgr 2007 Console.
So i thought it was because i was running a 32-bit version of Exchange. Later i found out, even the 64-bit version of Exchange would have issues. Here are some more details from Microsoft.
---------------------------------
32-bit Exchange 2007: This is not officially supported, I believe there are some RTM builds out there (for demo purposes, or to run in a VM). The final word is that Exchange 2007 is 64-bit only.
Exchange 2007 converted on OM 2007: There are a number of issues with the conversion, and the test team is looking at the details (even if it converts and imports – it currently doesn’t work).
Some of the issues may be related to the fact the MOM 2005 Exchange 2007 MP runs on a 32-bit (emulation) MOM agent monitoring the 64bit Exchange server, while the converted MP with OM 2007 uses an 64-bit agent to monitor Exchange 2007. In theory, all should be fine since the helper object (accessing the hosted Powershell) is available in 32 and 64bit, however that the theory only. There may also be some registry issues (looking up the keys in the 32 bit emulation registry). Our team is working with the Exchange team to resolve.
The bottom line is that we have to see what the investigation brings. Right now the plan is to deliver a converted Exchange 2007 MP for OM 2007 RTM
--------------------------------------------------
To summarize:
1. MP for Exchange 2007 won't work in MOM 2007 (Ops Mgr 2007) until RTM (in March 2007, i think)
2. MP for Exchange 2007 works well on MOM 2005 SP1.
3. Forget about 32-bit Exchange 2007, unless you wanted to do a quick Exchange 2007 ONLY demo.

Things to Consider Before you Deploy Full Disk Encryption
Read this article on Full Disk Encryption. Sure looks like a best practise kind of document for people considering full disk encryption.
What if you have encrypted a Petabyte of data with your secure storage solution and you then learn either the key or the algorithm is not strong enough? Article by Peter Giannoulis advises computer security managers to consider the lifecyle of the system several years after it is deployed.

SQL Server 2005 Waits and Queues:SQL Server Best Practices Article
This paper approaches the complex area of Microsoft® SQL Server™ performance tuning using a methodology called Waits and Queues.
Top 10 SQL Server 2005 Performance Issues for Data Warehouse and Reporting Applications
Relational Data Warehouse or Reporting work loads are characterized by low volumes of very large transactions. These applications are often identified as having predominately read workloads (e.g. Decision Support, Analysis, and Reporting) with periodic feeds or batch loads. It is important to keep these characteristics in mind as we examine the significance of database design, resource utilization and system performance. The top performance bottlenecks or gotchas to avoid for Data Warehouse or Reporting applications are outlined in this article at Mirosoft's TechCenter SQL Server site.

Microsoft Corp may be taking the most heat among software vendors for security problems, but it's not always the one with the worst record.
A comparison of vulnerabilities in Microsoft's SQL Server database with Oracle Corp.'s relational database management products by Next Generation Security Software Ltd. (NGSS) shows that the latter vendor's products to have far more vulnerabilities than do products from Microsoft.

Microsoft releases Windows Vista RC2
October 06, 2006 (Computerworld) -- Microsoft Corp. today released what it expects to be the final release of Windows Vista before the operating system is sent to manufacturing for distribution.
Windows Vista Release Candidate 2 (RC2), which is build number 5744, is being made available to 100,000 Customer Preview Program (CPP) participants, as well as to subscribers and members of TechBeta, TechNet, TAP and MSDN.
The company said that this newest build includes bug fixes, performance improvements, better application compatibility and "fit and finish" work -- tweaks to the look and feel of the operating system.
Microsoft also said that it is on target for making Windows Vista available to volume licensing customers in November and to consumers in January 2007. However, it added that "the final delivery will be based on quality" -- in other words, if it finds serious issues with the operating system, it would delay its planned launch. The company does not expect that to happen, however.
The company will continue to support RC1 through the official Windows Vista launch, and adds that RC1 can be used as the basis for logo certification.

Microsoft Research Builds BrowserShield
from: webappsec@securityfocus.com
"With BrowserShield, Wang argues, many such attacks could be blocked. BrowserShield can be used as a framework that rewrites HTML pages to deny any attempt at executing harmful code on browsers.

Phishing Attack Defeats Two-Factor Authentication
from: The SANS Institute [NewsBites@sans.org]
(13 & 10 July 2006)
Phishers are targeting Citibank Citibusiness customers using a man-in-the-middle attack to exploit people's trust in two-factor authentication. The scheme, if successful, would provide the phishers with Citibank Citibusiness customers' names and passwords in addition to temporary passwords generated by security tokens. The scheme passes on the customers' entered information to the legitimate site to see if it authentic. In a real-time attack scenario, the temporary passwords could be used before they expire. The phony site has reportedly been shut down.

Legendary hacker and author Kevin Mitnick has produced a whitepaper
Legendary hacker and author Kevin Mitnick has produced a whitepaper in which he details several scenarios in which social engineering exposed significant vulnerabilities that lead to corporate attacks.
People who have read Kevin's books and who like his style of writing will also enjoy the paper. What I find most valuable about this paper is that Mitnick remains neutral in his approach when he outlines his "Best Practices" approach to protection. He does a thorough analysis of various techniques and methodologies for mitigating risk and locking down endpoints, while allowing users enough flexibility to perform their jobs.
People can download the whitepaper in PDF format from www.appsense.com/mitnick
It's a good read, I would recommend it for anyone security inclined even if you just download it and save it for a rainy day :o)

The Depressing State Of Computer Security
From WServerNews.com newsletter.
Perhaps you know Roger Grimes. He's an InfoWorld Test Center Contributing Editor, Writes for WinITPro Mag, and is a Foundstone Ultimate Hacking instructor/consultant teaching Windows, Linux, Unix, and Solaris security.
His column this week was as depressing as it was interesting. He puts all his 10 fingers smack in the middle of many sore spots.
It was revealing and entertaining to read his admittedly gloomy perspective on security, but he did say that next week's column will point to some solutions. In the mean time, read this and get yourself trained as an IT security specialist. There will be a lot of work for -years- to come !

Microsoft has received a report of a new 0-day vulnerability involving Excel. They are currently investigating this issue and will issue more information on workarounds as it becomes available. They are currently blogging about it at http://blogs.technet.com/msrc/archive/2006/06/16/436174.aspx so check that site for more information as it becomes available. In the meantime, we continue to recommend the same defenses we recommended with the Word 0-day from last month located at http://isc.sans.org/diary.php?storyid=1347. These very general best practices should help alleviate the danger until Microsoft releases a patch or more specific workarounds.

Microsoft Seeks to Mobilize With Exchange SP2
Microsoft Seeks to Mobilize With Exchange SP2 By Clint Boulton
Microsoft is offering upgrades to Exchange Server 2003 with a new software pack that stresses better mobile messaging, improved spam blockers, and increased e-mail and mailbox storage capacity.
New mobile messaging tools in the Exchange Server Service Pack 2 (SP2) will help hardware partners and content providers deliver a device that "meets the demands of the end user for a rich mobile messaging experience."
For example, new direct push technology eliminates the need for SMS to notify and ensure a mobile device automatically retrieves new e-mail from an Exchange server. SP2 uses an HTTP connection to push new e-mail messages to the device.
The new version also provides greater control over mobile device security, including policy settings that let a user unlock a device with a password; local wipe, which dictates how many incorrect log-on attempts are permitted before your data might be at risk; and remote wipe, which allows administrators to remotely delete information from lost or stolen mobile devices.
Such features are big because research firms say business users are increasingly taking their work with them on the road in the form of handheld computers and smartphones. Such policies help to ensure that corporate data and applications are not compromised when devices are lost or get into the wrong hands.
Some partners have already announced plans to deliver devices that support SP2. Palm's Treo and Motorola's Q Windows Mobile 5.0 devices will be available in early 2006 and will include the MS Windows 5.0 Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP) and support for SP2. Also, DataViz' mobile Microsoft Exchange Server ActiveSync-enabled client, RoadSync, will offer support for key mobility features of SP2, including Direct Push and Remote Wipe on Symbian OS.
Customers are hip to the benefits of the new mobile technologies in SP2, too. HP is planing a companywide rollout of SP2 in the near future, Microsoft said.
On the security front, Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 adds Sender ID support and updates the Exchange Instant Message Filter to help businesses thwart spam, spoofing schemes and phishing.
Sender ID helps prevent unwanted mailbox phishing and spoofing schemes by verifying the IP address of the e-mail sender against the purported owner of the sending domain.
The result of the Sender ID check is used as input to the Exchange Intelligent Message Filter, which is based on the same SmartScreen filtering technology now used in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003, MSN Internet Software and Services, and Hotmail.
To fortify the Exchange mailbox in the face of the growing glut of data that users are creating, Exchange Server 2003 SP2 Standard Edition will increase the mailbox storage size limit to 75 gigabytes.
A new offline address book offers significantly improved performance when Outlook clients are operating in cached mode. Users can also now force clients into cached mode to help improve performance and increase the number of active users per server.
Customers who already have Exchange Server 2003 can download SP2 for free.
The release comes as Microsoft is prepping for its largest launch of the year: the Nov. 7 release of SQL Server 2005, Visual Studio 2005 and BizTalk Server 2006.
